Mobility Plan update

Collin County will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, June 26, 2007, to hear public comments on development of the Collin County Mobility Plan 2007 Update. The meeting will he held from 7-8 p.m. at the Central Jury Room in Annex "B" of the Collin County Courthouse, 314 S. Chestnut St., in McKinney.

Collin County is updating the Mobility Plan, which identifies transportation needs of area citizens and guides major transportation investments. Originally developed in 1998, the Mobility Plan identifies a network of existing and proposed roadways, transit, and hike-and-bike trails and is intended to serve the projected population and employment growth and travel demand throughout the county. The year-long plan update will address changes in development conditions and transportation needs that have occurred since the plan was last updated five years ago.

The public meeting will include an overview of the proposed update to the county's current plan, an explanation of the steps taken to update that plan, and an opportunity for residents to review and comment on the current draft of the plan. Citizens are invited to comment on the needed transportation improvements including roadways, transit, and pedestrian and bicycle facilities. Comments will be recorded and incorporated into the study.

Information about the proposed Mobility Plan update is available on the Internet at http://www.ccmpu.org/. A draft of the 2007 mobility plan map can be viewed on the website and downloaded for printing and review.

Driver in fatality accident sought

Wylie police are looking for Carlos Ocana Aguilar, 37, in connection with a fatality traffic accident early Friday morning.

The accident about 3:15 a.m. Friday, April 27, killed 47-year-old Alberto Salazar of Houston, who was a passenger in a motor vehicle.

Police said Carlos Ocana Aguilar, a Hispanic male, fled the scene prior to emergency personnel’s arrival.

Aguilar is wanted for Failure to Stop and Render Aid, which carries a $100,000 bond. Wylie Police believe Aguilar may be headed to Houston or Mexico in a 1996 green Ford Ranger Extended Cab with a Texas license plate number 01Z-XB1.

Investigators believe that Aguilar and Salazar were traveling eastbound when the vehicle left the roadway on the eastbound side entering the ditch. Aguilar appeared to have overcorrected and headed into the westbound ditch. He then brought the vehicle back onto the roadway, went sideways into the westbound ditch striking a tree and then struck a utility pole on the passenger side causing the vehicle to overturn.

Salazar was pronounced dead at the scene.

As part of the investigation, officers located blood on the outside of the vehicle and determined that it could not be Salazar’s due to his position in the vehicle.

The vehicle registration came back to a Wylie address. Officers went to the address on the vehicle registration and located fresh blood both outside and inside the residence. After further investigation and interviews, it was determined that Aguilar had packed a few of his personal belongings and left the residence.

The investigation is still underway to determine the cause of the accident; but it does not appear that alcohol was involved.

Let's Road-eo!

Must of us think we're good drivers but how would you measure up against others in head-to-head competition? The drivers of Wylie ISD buses will get to find out Saturday and they're inviting you to come watch.

The Fifth Annual Wylie ISD School Bus Road-e-o starts at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, April 21 at Raymond B. Cooper Junior High School, 101 Hensley Ln.
According to information from the district, drivers will face a simulated course of everyday bus routes and techniques. The contestants will be scored on how they handle and maneuver a railroad crossing, parking, pre-trip inspection, diminishing clearance, offset alley, as well as straight-line driving. These obstacles help the drivers focus on sharpening the skills that will better enable them to safely transport students to and from school every day, said WISD Spokesperson Susan Dacus.
Competition will be in categories including large conventional and transit-style buses. The top five winners in both categories will be eligible to participate in the Regional Competition, which is scheduled for May 5 at Plano East High School in Plano. Top three winners in each category at regionals will qualify for the State Competition scheduled for June in Waco.
